Beginner/Intermediate Splitboard
Considering making the jump from resort riding to backcountry? This is the adventure for you! If you can ride blacks at a ski area, you have enough experience to participate (we will mostly ride much easier terrain than this, but some sections can be narrow, icy, or rocky). We will get hands on practice with all of the equipment indoors before we head up to Hidden Valley to enjoy one of the best beginner areas in the state. Here we can practice skinning, terrain identification, transitions, and powder hunting in the familiar environment of a ski area (without lifts).
Splitboarding Day 1: Hidden Valley in Rocky Mountain National Park. We will meet at Trailborn to review the skills and equipment needed for the day. Once everyone feels comfortable, you will drive 20 minutes to Hidden Valley (in your own cars). Here, at the site of the old ski area (closed in 91′) we will start with basic skills and progress upward until we are standing atop a beautiful run. We will spend the day making turns in the best snow we can find before heading back to Trailborn.
Splitboarding Day 2: Hidden Valley, Rocky Mountain National Park. We will explore some of the more remote and less visited zones to use our new skills. Up here, above the trees, we will work on finding the deepest snow and best conditions in the region to develop a base of skills that will last a lifetime of winter adventures.
Intermediate/Advanced Splitboard
This is the perfect adventure for the progressing backcountry rider. Ideally you have taken your level 1 avalanche course and a rescue course, though anyone with awareness of avalanche problems and enough fitness to skin 2-3 thousand vert each day is welcome. We will spend the first day hunting the best powder we can find at Hidden Valley (at places you most likely have never been). After that we will head to Bear Lake Trailhead to dive into some of the deeper stashes of Rocky. We will chase the best pow we have and spend some time discussing how we found it and why we think it is safe so this will be a great learning environment as well.
Splitboarding Day 1: Hidden Valley, Rocky Mountain National Park. We will head straight for the more remote and deeper lines at Hidden Valley. We will get to know each other and our skills, and sample powder in bowls, trees, and gullies.
Splitboarding Day 2: Bear Lake, Rocky Mountain National Park. This area has a much more diverse selection of runs and terrain. Here we can get into more serious terrain (as conditions allow) and work under the mentorship of guides to practice advanced movement skills and avalanche mitigation techniques.
